The mediocre men are at it again. This time the “gentlemen” of the North Carolina house want to put a measure on the ballot to amend the NC constitution that it is an “indisputable scientific fact” that life begins at fertilization. I’m not a biologist, a medical doctor, and I didn’t stay at a holiday inn last night, but I understand that just because sperm meets egg, fertilization, this does not result in a human life. This is not about science this is about control. If life begins at fertilization, women with IUDs would be considered murders. And our Pro-Life Champions here in their bill, suggest that the fertilized “life” can be protected up to and including deadly force. Yep, you could murder a woman because you thought you were protecting the “life” she is carrying. Make it make sense. Where is the Pro-Life? Not here. It’s about control. Plain and simple. Control. Every time. Limiting the choices of women and making them less safe medically and physically. Not in NC, spread the word anyway. If this passes in NC, we know that other conservative leaning states will surely follow suit.
Together we can protect the lives and rights of our sisters, our friends, all women.
I’ll let Jen Hamilton, labor and delivery nurse and NC resident give you her perspective. Then I’ll tell you what you can do.
What can you do now?
1. Call your state representatives to oppose this bill preventing it from being on the ballot. Here are some scripts to make it easy on you. Pro-tip, nervous about calling? Call after business hours and leave a voicemail.
2. Get Loud! Tell your family, friends and neighbors. Share on your socials. Ask people if they have heard about this bill. Express your concerns, share this post, encourage them to call. Put pressure on your legislature to stop this in its tracks. Tips below on discussing with undecided voters.
3. Need more info, links to the bill itself and a local new report are included below.
Call Script
Use this script when calling your North Carolina state representative or senator.
Option #1
"Hello, my name is [Your Name] and I am a constituent living in [Your City/Town], zip code [Your Zip Code]. I am calling to urge Representative/Senator [Name] to protect reproductive rights and strongly oppose any abortion bans or constitutional amendments that restrict access to care, specifically House Bill 1232.
Restricting access endangers pregnant people, disproportionately affects marginalized communities, and worsens maternal health outcomes. Healthcare decisions should remain strictly between a patient and their doctor, not politicians. We have seen the chaos and harm that abortion restrictions cause in other states, and we do not want that to happen here. I urge you to vote 'No' on this harmful legislation."
Option #2
"Hello, my name is [Your Name] and I am a constituent living in [Your City/Town], zip code [Your Zip Code]. I am calling Representative/Senator [Name] to express my deep opposition to any proposed legislation or constitutional amendment that would ban or severely restrict access to abortion care in North Carolina, specifically House Bill 1232.
Abortion care is a fundamental part of reproductive healthcare. Forcing bans or ideological restrictions through the legislature directly harms the health, safety, and well-being of countless women, girls, and pregnant people across our state. Politicians do not have the medical expertise or the right to interfere in private, personal healthcare decisions.
I strongly urge you to stand up for the constitutional freedoms and healthcare rights of your constituents. Please oppose and vote against any measures that seek to limit abortion access. I will be closely monitoring your actions on this issue.”
Talking with an undecided voter?
If you are speaking at a hearing or having a conversation with an undecided voter, emphasize these points:
Medical Autonomy: Decisions regarding pregnancy and medical procedures should be left to patients and their trusted medical providers, not politicians.
No Room for Ideology: Restrictive legislation forces doctors to push state-mandated, ideological language rather than focusing on a patient's health.
Real-World Consequences: Restricting access endangers pregnant people, disproportionately affects marginalized communities, and worsens maternal health outcomes.
