Per usual in the dead of night, the Trump Administration has tried to avoid legal processes, this time, to remove Guatemalan immigrant children as young as elementary school age from the United States without due process. These children were boarded on planes to be returned to Guatemala into the custody of unknown individuals, some children expressing fears of abuse or exploitation to their attorneys. Thanks to a 14 day restraining order by a US District Judge, these children were returned to the shelters where they have been previously housed. Currently, Guatemalan children are being targeted, but other groups are likely next. Estimates indicate there could be 2000-7000 unaccompanied minors currently being detained in US custody. We know little about how they are being cared for and if they are receiving their due process. Are these children the “Worst of the Worst” the administration had promised would be the targets for deportation? No, they are not.
Act now! The restraining order is only 14 days! Take this opportunity to call your elected officials on behalf of these children.
Call Script:
“Hello, my name is [Your Name], I am calling to ensure the Department of Health and Human Services is taking all necessary steps to protect the safety and due process rights of all undocumented minors, specifically the group of targeted Guatemalan children. It is important that all children eligible for asylum or other protected statuses have the opportunity to have their cases heard. In addition, if children are to be returned to their home country it is the responsibility of the US to confirm they are returned to identifiable, safe, appropriate caregivers. As the wealthiest, most powerful country in the world, we must do better.
Please utilize the power of your office to protect these children. Thank you.”
